Fourth Course Hospitality at Tiffany Hill B&B

Living in Hendersonville offers pockets of poetry you won’t find elsewhere. Just ask the guests of Bed & Breakfast on Tiffany Hill in nearby Mills River NC. Mornings at this nationally acclaimed seven-suite inn begin with flaky quiche, roasted potatoes, and perhaps the most moving serenade you’ve ever experienced before noon—the Fourth Course.

Craig and Karen Verm, both seasoned professional musicians, have turned a life of performing on grand opera stages into something more intimate, heartfelt, and local. After years of traveling the world, they found their calling here with North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains as their stage backdrop. If you’re considering a move to Hendersonville or just visiting for a weekend, their story—and the experience they’ve created—is a shining example of the kind of magic life here can offer.

A Symphony of Stories at Breakfast

The Fourth Course is no ordinary encore. Each morning, following a decadent breakfast, guests are ushered into a piano-side performance of jazz, classical, or musical theater—sometimes tailored to someone’s specific memory or favorite lyrics. It’s not uncommon to see a tear or two, a clasped hand, a moment remembered.

“When the music plays here, you feel every note,” says frequent guest Donna Silverman. It was Karen’s piano accompaniment and Craig’s operatic baritone that sent a wave of emotion through her and her spouse one morning. That cherished moment brought them back—and now they’re regulars.

The Verm Family’s Instrumental Journey

Craig and Karen found each other at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Unlike the rest of us who might go out for coffee or a movie for a first date, they went with sweats, Thai food, and collaborative cooking. Their eventual path spiraled through Pittsburgh, Houston, and Europe before they discovered the perfectly nestled property now known as Tiffany Hill.

Originally purchased by Selena Einwechter—whose book Courage is Abundant in the Abstract inspired the Verms—a twist of fate and a little divine timing landed the artistic couple in Mills River. “God’s been making us ready all along,” Karen reflects.

Charm in Every Corner

Each of the seven thoughtfully designed suites at Tiffany Hill is named after a Southern town like Charleston or Charlottesville, and every morning brings a new culinary delight. Guests can stroll through blooming gardens, cozy up with a book in the quiet living room, or set off to local adventures in Loretta Lynn’s beloved Blue Ridge region.

Consider this your personal playlist of nearby treasures:

  • Take in the natural wonders of Pisgah National Forest and DuPont State Recreational Forest.
  • Experience local flavors and boutique shops in downtown Hendersonville or Brevard.
  • Catch the Carolina spirit at nearby events listed in Our State’s Carolina Calendar.

Blending Careers with Community

The Verms haven’t left their careers behind entirely. Craig still takes the occasional opera stage, and Karen remains a sought-after accompanist—and she performs weekly at their church, Grace Mills River. But it’s the blend of music and hospitality they offer here in Mills River that has finely tuned their purpose.

“There’s magic when you look into someone’s eyes and see the music move them,” says Craig. “It’s not just background ambience. It’s soul work.” Add that level of emotional connection to the already stunning setting of western NC, and you’ve got more than a place to stay—you’ve got a reason to relocate to Hendersonville.
