Yancey County is home to the largest peak east of the Mississippi, Mount Mitchell which stands at 6,684 feet. An addition four peaks in the Black Mountains round out five of the 10 highest on the east coast: Mount Craig, Balsam Cone, Mount Gibbs and Potato Hill. The county seat is the town of Burnsville and the county has an estimated 2020 population just under 19,000 residents.
